This summer all face to face classes at U of I have been cancelled due to the Covid 19 Virus. Therefore, we are migrating online. High school educators are invited to join us for an intensive ONLINE professional development opportunity blending design research, design thinking and case study exploration
The course will investigate design research methods based on the book, The Pocket Universal Methods of Design and introduce design case studies utilizing the book, Iconic Design: 50 Stories About 50 Things. The design research method utilized in human centered design and its application within high school curriculums will provide a core of implementable design thinking activities for teachers.
The class will combine synchronous lectures with live discussion. The class size will be capped at 10 participants in order to make the online format personal and engaging. The class is divided into two weeks, with a one week break in between. It will meet M-F, 2-4 pm during the week of 6/22-26, and M-F, 2-4 pm during the week of 7/6-10, for a total of 10 sessions. There will be 10 hours of asynchronous activities assigned. Successful participants can earn up to 30 Professional Development hours.
Although there are many online design courses available, the DTPSS class is tailored specifically to the needs, opportunities and constraints of the secondary school teacher. Our goal is that participants will come away with ideas for design activities that could be implemented into their high school design curriculums.
