Art Gallery 2020 - 2021 Application

The Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Illini Union in the northwest corner of the building.  It is approximately 1900 square feet.  The Illini Union serves as the student center for the University of Illinois.  The Union provides services daily to thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors to the U of I campus.

Selection Process

The Illini Union Board (IU Board) Arts Committee, a group of current University of Illinois undergraduate students, along with special guest faculty and staff members will select the final artwork to be displayed in the Illini Union Art Gallery for the 2020 Fall Semester. The selection will be made based on the timeline listed under “Important Dates”, with notice to all applicants occurring no later than Friday, September 11th, 2020. Selection is based on the quality of work, size of exhibit proposed, and the benefit of the exhibit to the University of Illinois Community. 

General Information

  • As a part of this application, please include in your application at least 8 - 10 pictures of artwork included in your proposed exhibit. Please note that these photos must be included in your application and submitted by Monday, August 31st, the application deadline.
  • Exhibits are displayed for approximately 3 - 4 weeks, allowing for installation and removal of the complete exhibit.
  • Applications will be reviewed for display during the 2020 Fall Semester only. Please know that this time encompasses all University holidays, breaks. If there is a time period that you do not want to be considered for display, please indicate this on your application.
  • The IU Board Arts Committee will review all submissions; however, the committee reserves the right to not select any submissions to be featured in the Gallery.
  • All Artists will be required to sign a contract with the Illini Union Board once their exhibit has been selected for display in the Illini Union Art Gallery. 
  • Notes about the ongoing COVID-19 situation:
    • We plan to display art during the Fall 2020 semester as long as the building is open. This may lead to certain consequences such as a Virtual Gallery Reception.
    • At this time, we cannot guarantee there will be an Opening Reception for any exhibits that are displayed in Fall 2020.
    • There are fewer available slots for the 2020 Fall Semester due to the rescheduling of canceled exhibits from the later part of the Spring 2020 semester.

Important Dates

  • APP DEADLINE DATE & TIME: The application closes on Monday, August 31st, 2020 at 12 pm. All submissions must be submitted online.  Hard copies will not be considered. 
  • NOTIFICATION DATE: Artists/Sponsors will receive notification of their selection status by the IU Board Arts Committee no later than Friday, September 11th, 2020.
